Altavista has excellent parks and community facilities available for use by citizens. English Park has ball fields, picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, basketball courts, and playground equipment. The Booker Building is located at English Park and is used for all types of gatherings, including family reunions, wedding receptions, and community events such as Uncle Billy’s Day. Shreve Park has playground equipment, ball fields, picnic pavilions, and an amphitheater. Another community facilities available for use is the Train Station.

The house is an excellent example of 19th Century American Queen Anne architecture and is listed on both the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places. It is operated by the non-profit Avoca Museum and Historical Society. Avoca is open to the public for tours from mid-April to the last Friday in October, and is closed for some holidays. Hours of operation are Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Sundays 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The house contains a unique collection of local antiques, including Native American artifacts and Civil War memorabilia. There is a bateau and an 1880 log cabin on site. A three acre Arboretum will be completed in the Spring of 2007. Avoca hosts an annual wine festival in September. Avoca is available for private and corporate rentals year round. A check list is provided to the renter. Renters will have a $150 custodial fee deducted from their security deposit if the building is not cleaned properly. The Booker Building may be reserved at Town Hall. Call 369-5001 to verify availability. Security deposit must be paid at time of reservation. Rental fee must be paid in full one-week prior to event. Two signatures are required for rental. The Booker Building does not have air
conditioning or kitchen facilities. Grills may not be used inside the
building. Alcoholic beverages are allowed; however, renter must obtain a
temporary license from the Virginia ABC in Lynchburg and must pay for an
off-duty police officer to be present during the entire event. Shreve Park and English Park each have a small and large picnic pavilion available for rental. Large: Rental fee is $50.00 for 4 hours, 12 tables, Accommodates approximately 100 people Small: Rental fee is $25.00 for 4 hours, 6 tables, Accommodates approximately 50 people There are no on-site grills. You may bring a grill to use, but grills may not be used underneath the pavilion itself. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in
all Town parks. Pavilions may be reserved at Town Hall. Call 369-5001 to verify availability. Rental fee must be paid at time of reservation. All parks close at dark. When not reserved by any group,
pavilions are available free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis. Both adult and youth sports programs are offered in Altavista through the YMCA. You do not need to be a member to take part in team sports activities. Youth sports programs include basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, and swim team. programs, contact the Recreation Department at 592-9570. The Altavista Train Station is available by rental only. The Train Station has kitchen facilities and can accommodate approximately 75 people seated at tables. The Train Station is ideal for dinner meetings, receptions, and for classroom-style training.
